How can we guide our students to ethically and effectively use AI in their academic and professional roles?

Dr. Michael Bordieri has always been curious about technological innovations, and as an early adaptor of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, he is excited to share his experiences with his colleagues. ChatGPT-4 has this to say about the workshop: This session aims to demystify the basics of AI and provide actionable guidelines for incorporating it responsibly into academic curricula and research. Faculty will walk away with a basic understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations, strategies for its ethical deployment, and ideas for fostering responsible AI use among their students.

Objectives

Describe the basic architecture of generative text AI systems such as ChatGPT.

Legality and Ethics of Generative AI in Academic Research

What are the ethical and legal challenges associated with Generative AI (GAI) use in academic research? What can be done to mitigate these challenges?

Recent years have seen a proliferation of generative AI (GAI) tools that can support or even revolutionize academic research and publishing (Lund et al., 2023). In academic research, GAI tools can be used to automate or facilitate tasks such as text generation, literature review, information finding, article summaries, rewriting, citation management, etc. Although GAI can offer tangible benefits to researchers, it can also cause serious ethical and legal controversies when used unscrupulously in academic research.

This presentation aims to explore the main legal and ethical challenges arising from the use of GAI in academic research and offer some tips on how these issues can be mitigated.

Issues such as plagiarism and copyright will be addressed.

Are you curious about integrating ChatGPT in student-led discussions?

Students often give personal opinions about topics and issues in class discussions and support their perspectives with research, but what information does artificial intelligence offer? This session will share how students in one course use responses generated by ChatGPT to reflect on what they studied in a module, apply it to new contexts, and lead meaningful discussions with their peers.

Objectives

Describe the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on teaching and learning.
Design an assignment or activity in which the learner and/or faculty member will use generative AI tools.
Determine how to mitigate any shortcomings that a generative AI tool could present for the student during the assignment or activity.
