Top 10 Strategies to Help Online Students Learn

What strategies do online students prefer their instructors use to help them learn successfully?

Join us in this session to review major trends from online students’ responses and recommendations for using best practices to facilitating online learning. Participants will review:

• a very brief summary of the methodology used to conduct the research
• a brief synopsis of the major trends from the research findings (over 30 online strategies recommended by over 600 students)
• actual responses (direct quotes) from students regarding the top 10 online strategies that they would like their instructors do to help them learn successfully
• similarities among the top 10 strategies (recommended by students). Relevant connections will be made among the online students’ responses, the 7 Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education and the Quality Matters Rubric
• best practices for facilitating online learning

Participants will also be given the opportunity to share relevant experiences or best practices and ask questions about online learning.

Why I Ditched Quizzes and Exams for Discussions and Authentic Assessments

This session will showcase how one professor, for the past three years, sidelined quizzes and exams and designed authentic assessments that measured whether a student met a learning outcome and offered a genuine purpose for the student. Assessment examples will be presented to demonstrate the benefits of transitioning from traditional exams to discussion-based and authentic assessment methods. Challenges to eliminating or reducing exams in favor of discussions and meaningful assessments also will be highlighted.
