Hearing, Seeing, Doing...Strategies to Help Students Learn

What strategies can be used inside and outside the classroom to assist students with learning?

How do we as teachers ensure our students are learning the material we are teaching? How do we adapt our teaching strategies to enhance students' ability to learn both inside and outside the classroom? This can sometimes be a daunting task.

This session will highlight three strategies used to enhance student learning:

1) Hearing: introductory lecture using a lecture capture system;

2) Seeing: using demonstrations during class time to educate students on proper technique of the activity;

3) Doing: allowing students to practice the activity to ensure they have the ability to apply the knowledge they have obtained.

Participants will be able to:

1) Review different strategies to assist students with learning;

2) Explain how to utilize different strategies to enhance student learning inside and outside their classroom

Pecha Kucha: Helping Students Learn, Communicate, and Engage

How can we use the all too familiar PowerPoint to help students create and present their own narrative in less than 7 minutes and still be thorough?

Today we have alternatives to PowerPoint when it comes to planning a presentation. However, many of us (students included), gravitate to using PowerPoint. With suggested changes like reducing verbiage and adding images within slides, change is happening but slowly.

In this session, the presenter will showcase a tried and tested format for using PowerPoint, including how students shared their learning in a brief and concise way. This presentation format holds advantages for students to work together, communicate better, internalize learning, and share multiple perspectives in their learning.

Session participants will be equipped to do the following:

Create a time-limited automatic play version of a PowerPoint presentation using a self-created narrative
Organize slide content that is in sync with the oral presentation
Rehearse the content
Communicate the content to engage the audience

Bring a laptop and refresh yourself about the assignments you are using in your classes that require papers or presentations.

Advance Your Instruction into the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Have you implemented a new teaching approach that you could write about and publish?

The scholarship of teaching and learning is a systematic, evidence-based approach to improving teaching and learning. Examples are comparing assessment results, administering student surveys and practicing a different instructional approach. Practicing SoTL research helps you to assess better what is working in your courses and publish your findings. This workshop will guide you in developing an individual action plan for a SoTL project.

By the end of the workshop, faculty will be able to do the following:

Review ideas for a scholarship of teaching and learning research project.
Develop an individual action plan for a SoTL project.

Are you seeking an interactive technology tool that will help your students to think critically?

Online discussion forums in Canvas or via Zoom are active learning tools to facilitate scholarly and robust conversations. However, engaging learners in the virtual environment can be challenging. This session will guide attendees through strategies and educational technology tools to vary their online discussion approaches.

By the end of the session, faculty attendees will be able to do the following:

Apply various discussion approaches or protocols to design effective online discussions.
Use educational technology to vary online discussions.
Generate strategies to monitor online discussions.

Teaching The Future

The title says it all, or does it? Should it be Teaching, The Future?

And, really "the" should not be capitalized. However, this talk will be about Technology in "The Future." Ten years from now, what will technology look like? And, how do we teach about where we are heading in technology? This is a casual overview of where technology is heading. Hopefully, you are curious. We can share thoughts during the presentation.
