Building Student Confidence in Challenging Courses Through Relationship-Rich Education

To inspire students to learn and reduce anxiety in challenging courses, a relationship-rich educational approach offers meaningful opportunities in the classroom.

At the same time, students build the confidence needed to succeed. This session will include lessons from an upper-level, undergraduate research methods course in which a relationship-rich strategy has been effective. Exams and quizzes were eliminated, and project-based learning (using scaffolding) was implemented. Peer discussions and helpful, warm instructor feedback guided the students to create an encouraging learning community.

Essay Alternatives: Infographics as Visual Essays in the University Classroom (Blitz Week 2023)

This session will invite participants to discuss essay alternatives and introduce using infographics as visual essays, especially in survey and lower-level courses. The session will introduce infographics broadly before focusing on the visual essay format. Participants will review assignment language and criteria as well as student samples.

Does your feedback on student assignments offer helpful recommendations?

Feedback on student assignments should lead to helpful recommendations that contain five characteristics: constructive, specific, measurable, sensitive, and balanced. In this workshop, you will practice writing a helpful recommendation that could become a critical driver toward student success.

Session Objectives:

Identify elements of a helpful recommendation.
Explain the components and characteristics of a helpful recommendation.
Write an effective helpful recommendation.
