In this episode, Dr. Firm Faith Watson will be conversing with Dr. Linda B. Nilson, director emerita of the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation at Clemson University and author of Teaching at Its Best*, now in its fourth edition. She also wrote *The Graphic Syllabus and the Outcomes Map*, *Creating Self-Regulated Learners*, *Specifications Grading*, *Online Teaching at Its Best with Ludwika Goodson, and Creating Engaging Discussions with Jennifer Herman. She is currently writing a book on teaching critical thinking. Her career as a full-time faculty development director spanned over 25 years at Clemson, Vanderbilt, and the University of California, Riverside. Previously, she was a sociology professor at UCLA. She has given over 500 keynotes, webinars, and live workshops nationally and internationally on dozens of topics related to college teaching and scholarly productivity.

You Bet Class Can be Fun: Levity in the Classroom

Do you feel like your on-the-ground or online classes could use a little pick-me-up?

This session will examine ways in which levity in the classroom can benefit students. We will explore research collected on Murray State students that suggests that simply including “cute” images in the classroom can help students to perform better on cognitive tests. We will then explore how humor, social interactions, games, and other fun can reduce a sense of drudgery and contribute to student learning and instructor amusement alike.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to critically reflect on the ways in which levity fits into their classroom goals, discuss activities consistent with these goals, and plan at least one activity for their current classes utilizing these newly-learned strategies.

Encouraging Classroom Participation Through Electronic "Temperature Checks"

Come to this session to learn how a quick google form can help encourage your students to get involved! Participants will learn the skills needed to implement this technique: how to create a google form, how to provide students with easy access to said form through QR codes and tiny urls, and how to analyze participation data at the end of the semester.
