What else can I do in an online course besides lecturing or recording a lecture?

The lecture or recorded lecture, however effective, might not be beneficial to meet certain learning objectives and outcomes in an online course. In this session, participants will explore alternative strategies such as the colloquim, role-play, debate, literature circle, and others.

Session participants will be equipped to do the following.

Design online courses that include learning experiences beyond lectures
Assess students' knowledge and mastery through a wide variety of online instructional strategies beyond lectures

Transforming Education Using the Connectedness Cycle as a Framework (Session 1)

Looking for strategies to connect meaningfully with students, and then use those connections to drive instruction?

The connectedness cycle is an emerging framework for practice that advances the understanding and implementation of relationship-rich educational practices. These relationship-rich educational practices allow for more meaningful student engagement, and they serve to enhance academic outcomes. When embodied by faculty, the connectedness cycle has the ability to transform education.

Session Objectives:

Define the connectedness cycle
Explain how the connectedness cycle is supported by research.
Explain how a paradigm shift can occur in classrooms that utilize the connectedness cycle as a framework for instruction.
Identify at least 3 connectedness cycle practices relevant to your classroom environment that can be employed immediately.
