Are you interested in learning more about service learning and how to implement it into a course?

Here at the Faculty Development Center we work to provide you with academic and co-curricular opportunities that connect you to the local community and the world through service. We aim to deepen and enhance your educational experience at Murray State University by helping you understand how you can contribute and make a real difference in the lives of others.

Join Shawna Thomas, Instructional Designer/Service Learning Coordinator, and your colleagues in a service learning session to define and apply the practical knowledge and strategies involved in implementing service learning within the classroom and the community. Session participants will discover how to do the following:

Recognize the differences between service learning and volunteering
Develop and implement service learning into your course
Apply for the service learning designation

Service Learning as an Online Tool

How can online learning tools enable my students to apply the knowledge and skills of my discipline in a service oriented community project?

Service learning is an effective means of integrating experiential learning opportunities into your courses that will aid your students in mastering the knowledge and skills of your discipline while addressing a community need or area of interest. With the right community collaborator and a little imagination, online learning tools can expand the scope of service projects to communities beyond Murray. This session will examine the benefits and challenges of implementing an online service learning project by sharing tips and best practices gleaned from the Spanish program's ongoing collaborative project with the English Language Learning program at Mayfield High School.

Participants will consider ways to do the following:

Cultivate community contacts (locally or globally) who are willing to implement a project that will benefit students and community stakeholders alike.
Identify needs or interests in a community that your students can help meet through the application of knowledge and skills that they learn in your course.
Adapt online learning tools to serve as the means of project implementation.
