Ask an Editor

It’s been one hour since I submitted my manuscript, why is this taking so long?! I found a typo, should I call the editor at home to warn them? Okay, the article is published, where’s the celebratory cake? Where’s the call from the Nobel committee?

Researching and writing the paper isn't always the hardest part about the publishing process. Often the most excruciating aspects can be deciphering a revision request, understanding a lag in communication, or overcoming an urge to write to the editor. If you’re an early-career researcher, graduate student, or even a seasoned author for whom this struggle continues to be real, you are invited to this frank, candid conversation featuring a panel of eight faculty researchers with editorial roles from across campus.

In this panel, attendees will have the opportunity to do the following:

Hear colleagues with editorial experience share their thoughts
ask frank questions about publishing in a friendly environment
Commiserate with fellow scholars about publication

Dr. Michael Bordieri (Associate Professor, Psychology, CHFA) is a licensed psychologist and behavior analyst who serves as review editor for Frontiers in Psychology published by Frontiers Media.
AJ Boston (Assistant Professor, University Libraries) is a scholarly communication librarian, Library Publishing Coalition Fellow (2019 - 2021), SPARC Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions Steering Committee member (2021- 2023), and KYVL Affordable Learning Steering Committee member (2021 - current). Boston assists in the publication of four faculty-led journals, one student-led journal, and the archival of green open-access scholarship.
Dr. Summer Cross (Associate Professor, Nursing, SNHP) is an advanced practice nurse and family nurse practitioner, and has published numerous publications in various national and international peer-reviewed journals and presented scientific papers across the world.
Cris Ferguson (Associate Professor, University Libraries) is the interim-Dean of University Libraries and current Director of Technical Services. Cris served as an associate editor and regular column contributor to Against the Grain.
Dr. Kate S. He (Professor, Biology, CSET) is a plant ecologist, Porter Open Access Initiatives Award recipient, and serves as senior editor for the International Journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation published by Wiley.
Dr. Carrie Jerrell (Associate Professor, Creative Writing, CHFA) is the coordinator of Murray State’s creative writing program, as well as faculty advisor for Notations, the undergraduate literary magazine of Murray State University. She is also the former managing editor for Iron Horse Literary Review out of Texas Tech University and she currently serves on the Advisory Boards of the literary journals 32 Poems and Measure.
Dr. Sarah Lefebvre (Associate Professor, Marketing, AJBCOB) researches on consumption, emerging trends, and service interactions in food and beverage. She is assistant editor for the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management published by Emerald Publishing.
Dr. Jamie Mahoney (Associate Professor, Adolescent, Career, and Special Education, COEHS) serves as editor-in-chief of the 13-year strong KTEJ: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children, published by MSU Libraries.
Dr. Jeffrey Young (Assistant Professor, Agriculture, HSA) is an applied economist, data scientist, farmer, and founding editor of the Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research, published by MSU Libraries.

Spotlight on Open Scholarship

What is Open Scholarship? How does it benefit the public and our institution? Who is engaged with OER, open pedagogy, public history, and open science on our campus?

Open Scholarship is a natural fit for a public university with a mission to actively engage in collaborative scholarship, creative activity, and research in our communities and beyond. In celebration of International Open Access Week (October 25 to 31), this panel will highlight the work of four Murray State faculty members who are engaged in Open Educational Resources, Open Pedagogy, Open Science, and Public History.

Using Google Forms for Assessment (Blitz Week 2022)

What can Google Forms do for you?

Google forms can help you survey your students to find out who they are, what they like, and help you to build relationships with them. It is great for exit tickets at the end of the class or during class to find out if students are learning what you are teaching. You can create an assessment and have it grade it, put it in a spreadsheet and save it for you. You can then analyze it and see just what your students are responding with and to the answers. How are they responding?? I know google forms can get a bit overused but if used like everything else in moderation and purposeful - it can be a handy tool.

LOL-Intention: The Foundation for Today's Instruction

Do your students know what you have in mind? Do they know your intention?

Intention is an interpersonal communication construct that has been pursued minimally in scholarship in the instructional context. However, the construct of intention is conceptualized differently across the disciplines — such as psychology, philosophy and education — and as such, is nuanced. What does this mean for our instruction? This research argues the need for instructors to communicate intention in their instruction, since the instructor initiates the teaching and learning process by charting a clear path for the learner to start and follow successfully. Ideas on how to be more intentional will be shared.

Session Objectives

Discuss the value of intention in instruction while reflecting on current approaches in the online classroom.
Examine instructional applications to communicate instructional intention to students.

We're rolling out our next University Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) soon. Attend this session to see how you and your students can benefit. QEP is an integral part of our reaccreditation process with SACS. Over the past year, we’ve worked with our broad campus community to identify "Wellness" as our greatest area of need, and the topic of this QEP. With the help of representatives from each college and several departments across campus, we're in the early stages of developing our implementation and assessment plan.
